Couples who are planning a wedding on their own are overwhelmed by the tasks and inflict a lot of internal pressure on themselves

RESEARCH

How did I decide my Target Audience?

How did I decide my Target Audience?

A wedding involves two sets of people, the couple (obviously) and the guests. The problem I am trying to solve requires designing a solution that allows couple to plan their wedding efficiently. Planning a wedding also involves taking care of guests. So,

Do I need to consider the needs, feelings and pain points of a guest too ? YES

When I proceed to dive deep into my research involving surveys and user interviews, I’ll consider “couple who chose to plan their own wedding “ as my target audience, but also taking into consideration their needs, feelings and painpoints as a guest (beacuse everyone is a guest to someone else’s wedding), so that I could have two required and mandatory perceptions, but from a single target audience which aptly justifies my design process for the solution.

MARKET ANALYSIS

The Competition had no services to solve guest needs

The Competition had no services to solve guest needs

I analyzed 3 most popular apps dominating the wedding planning market. All the apps contain few services that are not available in the other ones. Apps have restricted few services to only paid users. While all competitors came up with solutions addressing this problem, the solutions could still be improved exponentially in terms of UI, image cluttering and free services instead of paid. Almost none of the apps offer services that aim to solve the needs of a guest. Working out a solution offering services that satisfy the needs of a guest would give me an edge over other competitors. This then became my opportunity to design something unexplored while also keeping in mind to design for my target audience.

There are many other features which the user could benefit from, but they might get overshadowed by these Ineffective “Find vendor” feature which might make the user lose trust in the app and forces them to stop using the app anymore , which is what we are trying to avoid at all costs.

So in conclusion I realized that vendor module is more of a hassle than a utility

Therefore, I chose not to include the “find vendors” feature in my solution as I want to focus more on productivity.

CONCLUSION + TAKEAWAYS

This way my first ever UX project 🥳. More than the actual output, I’m immensely grateful to have been through an entire design process from start to end. I now know what goes behind a solution that makes people’s lives better. On that note, a few things I’ve learned:

Stop chasing visual appreciation. A user appreciates usability over visuals any day. I would like to quote this “ Only when a design fails does it call attention to itself; when it succeeds, it’s invisible” which I firmly believe. I tried to excite the user with the visuals, but that somehow cluttered my designs and overwhelmed the user, which I have later improved and iterated based on feedback. So, stop chasing visual appreciation and keep it simple

It’s never too late to iterate. I didn’t get my designs right the first time, nor the second. A design is never done because there is always a possibility to do better. I conducted usability studies and feedback sessions that helped me gather insights which I otherwise might have overlooked. Iteration is key when it comes to designing efficient solutions.

Limit your solution to the needs of the user. Designers can get carried away and unconsciously feel the urge to design solutions which they think might excite the user, but clearly lack usability and can cause foundational ux problems. However, it was evident how much better my designs got after attentively listening to feedback and actively seeking after the why’s and how’s of the problem. This really resonated with me early on and I’ll keep this in mind when designing future projects.
